There are several stages involved in breeding cucumbers, and breeders often start working on multiple crosses each year, usually with different objectives for each cross.

Population development (fall and winter greenhouse)
Population improvement (spring season field test; summer season isolation intercross)
Inbreeding and selection (spring field; single-plant hills)
Inbred development (spring field testing; replicated, single-harvest trials)
Hybrid testing (spring and summer field; replicated, multiple-harvest trials)
Inbred and hybrid seed increase (fall and winter greenhouse)
Cultivar release (field isolation block)
